Dronfield is situated in the north-east of Derbyshire and comprises of three communities - Dronfield, Dronfield Woodhouse and Coal Aston. It is situated in a greenbelt area, halfway between the city of Sheffield, famous for its cutlery, to the north and Chesterfield, known for its crooked spire, to the south. To the west, it is bordered by a couple of miles of open countryside, then you enter the Peak District National Park, with all its beauty and splendour.

Dronfield has grown rapidly in the last 25 years, and is now a mixture of modern housing, fine old buildings and commercial properties and is assumed to be the largest township in North East Derbyshire, covering approximately 3,500 acres.
Several years have passed since Sheffield tried to merge with Dronfield, but thanks to concerted efforts by the local community, this proposal was turned down, and Dronfield still remains part ot Derbyshire.

The town centre still has a lot of the old and listed buildings, and most of these are situated around the High Street area. One of these, situated near the top of the High Street, is the Peel Monument. Built of gritstone in 1854, the Monument is a tribute to Sir Robert Peel, and celebrates the repeal of the Corn Laws in 1846.It is probably one of the most photographed features of Dronfield and was built on the site of the old market cross and stocks. The town library, once an attractive 18th-century manor house has now found a new lease of life serving the community. On the site of an old forge, a new shopping centre has been built. This complex, houses shops, restaurant and a bar, with its own carpark

Town centre shopping is well served by several buses and has ample car parking, the shops, civic buildings, library, health centre and sports centre with swimming pool lying conveniently in the upper town near to the Peel Monument. Close by are several public houses and restaurants. Shopping can also be done in Dronfield, on the main Sheffield - Chesterfield road, The Forge, and Green Acres. Dronfield Woodhouse and Coal Aston are both served by their own shopping areas, Pentland Road and Barnard Avenue, as well as the ones in Dronfield.

The area is also well served for schools, with a wide choice of nursery, infant and junior schools, as well as The Dronfield secondary school.
